How do holiday lights survive a Chicago ice storm?

By being installed for one. Tightened clip spacing so an iced strand is carried by many points, weather-sealed connections so meltwater does not trip a circuit, commercial-grade strands cut to length with no slack to swing, and clips matched to the surface. Big-box strands on plastic hooks are what end up on the lawn.

What an ice storm actually does

Freezing rain glazes every strand on the house, doubles its weight, and loads the clips. Then the wind picks up behind the front. A strand that was fine at four in the afternoon is sagging by dinner and on the ground by morning, and a connection that was not sealed is sitting in meltwater and tripping the circuit. Hinsdale and Burr Ridge estates with big exposed elevations and mature trees shedding ice onto the roof get it worst. Frankfort, Mokena, and Tinley Park get the same storms on newer, wider rooflines.

How we install for it

Four things. Clip spacing is tightened on every exposed run so the ice load is spread across many points instead of a few. Every plug and junction is weather-sealed. Strands are commercial-grade LED cut to the exact run, so there is no coiled slack to swing and no splice at the ridge to fail. And the clip is matched to the surface: a shingle clip on asphalt, a gutter clip on a copper or aluminum lip, a fascia clip behind the drip edge, a non-penetrating bracket on slate or tile. Nothing is stapled, nailed, or drilled.

What we do after the storm

If a section goes dark, we come fix it at no additional charge. That is part of every install. What we will not do is put a crew on a glazed roof while the ice is still on it, and we tell clients that honestly. A delayed service call is an inconvenience. A fall is not.

The permanent answer

A permanent LED channel does not hang, so there is nothing for ice to load or wind to lift. It is fixed to the fascia, the nodes are sealed inside, and it switches to holiday or team colors from an app. For homeowners tired of watching the forecast in December, it is the cleanest solution we offer.
